From the JVP COMELEC: Choosing Leaders

Dear JVP Community,

Leadership is crucial.

The crisis in our country highlights the importance of leadership in the success and well-being of a group, an organization, a nation. As a people, we clamor for credible and effective national leadership. Consistent with this clamor, we are called to promote this kind of leadership in our various contexts.

One of these contexts is our own organization and community: JVP. In the General Assembly announcement you will receive by snail mail next week, you will notice that there will be elections for the Board of Trustees this coming August 21. As part of formalizing and enhancing the process of selection and election of the Board members, the JVPFI COMELEC - headed by Ms. Ces Bulos, with Mr. Rey Laguda and Atty. Andrew Isip as members – promulgated Rules and Guidelines for the nomination and election of Board members and the voting for proposed amendments to the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. A major change in the selection of Board members is the laying down of criteria for selection of Board members and the opening of nominations to the Board and securing the consent of nominees, both by fax, e-mail, or snail mail as early as today. Please find attached the New COMELEC Rules & Guidelines and the Nomination Form.

The move to formalize and enhance the Board selection process does not only satisfy the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC) requirement of a clear set of criteria and selection procedure of the Board members. (We are exerting effort to secure certification by the PCNC that will enhance the legitimacy and credibility of JVP and make donations to JVP tax deductible as an added incentive to potential donors.) It also hopes to widen the reach of the selection process by including those who are not able to attend the General Assembly.

As the highest leadership in JVP, the Board of Trustees is important and decisive of the future of our Foundation. Let us work together – Board, staff and members – to help JVP give its best contribution to build a just society especially for our brother and sister Filipinos in need.
